Nepal Earthquake: Over 9 Lakh Children Need Immediate Aid with Food, Clothing to Survivors
The Nepal earthquake, the worst in the last 80 years, has caused massive destruction to lives and properties in 30 of the 75 districts, affecting at least 2.8 million children, of which 9,40,000 are in need of immediate aid.
The earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale has wreaked havoc on the country, reducing many buildings, monuments and houses to rubble, besides disrupting power and water supply. It was then followed by over 60 aftershocks, forcing people to stay in the open, despite rain and cold.
What the survivors need at the moment are water, clothing, food, tents and medicine.
The donations need not be only in kind, as monetary contributions are also needed. Apart from the government of India, several organisations have initiated relief funds to collect money for the affected citizens of Nepal to provide them food, clothes, clean water, medicines and shelters. Our Nepal Mission of Himalaya Mt. Everest Tower Organization’s Volunteer Team have been involving rescue and save to the survivors.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck central Nepal on April 25, affecting more than 6.6 million people in Nepal causing widespread damage and destruction numerous buildings to collapse and made some roads impassable.
It also triggered an avalanche in the Mount Everest region and more than a dozen aftershocks of considerable magnitude.

Nepal is located in a geographic region prone to natural disasters. Because of rugged and fragile topography, high rift and steep slope, complex geology, variety of climatic conditions, unplanned urbanization, exposed population along with poor economic condition and low literacy rate have made Nepal vulnerable to various types of natural disasters like earthquake, landslide, flood, avalanche, glacial lake outburst flood etc.

Loss of lives and property are a regular phenomenon, and the number of such events is on the rise due to natural as well as man-made causes. Among the main reasons of natural disasters in Nepal are active tectonic and geomorphic processes, young and fragile geology, variable climatic conditions, unplanned settlement, increasing population, weak economic condition and low literacy rate.

Nepal is therefore geologically found to be vulnerable to various types of natural disasters such as flood, landslide, fire, epidemic, earthquake, avalanche, windstorm, hailstorm, lightning more dangerous than the tsunamis faced by sea-faring countries due to its downwards-movement through gravity.
Drought affects the whole country; Middle Mountain and Terai are affected by forest fire and Higher Himalayas by avalanche. The demographic factors such as rapid population growth, human encroachment into the vulnerable lands, poverty and widespread ignorance towards sustainable use of natural resources has further worsen the level of disasters risk.

Natural disasters often Humanitarian work with HIMET in Nepal have significant impact on social, economic, cultural and environmental systems there is an urgent need to redress the proactive policies related to natural disasters, with emphasis on preparedness, rescue, relief management and rehabilitation. Natural disasters cannot be prevented, but their effect can certainly be greatly minimized if there is a right amount of preparedness.

There are more than 6000 rivers and streams in Nepal that generally flow from the north towards the south with high velocity due to high river gradient. Most of the big rivers are snow fed which originate from the higher Himalayan range covered by snow in all seasons. Adverse geo-climatic conditions and cloudburst are the main reasons for flood and landslide in Nepal.

Further, unplanned human settlements and physical constructions without due consideration to the natural hazards are considerably aggravating the mountain environment.
Each year such types of disasters cause losses to a number of human lives and immense damage to agricultural land, crops, human settlements and other properties.
We believe that helping to empower the people and enhancing the capacity of the local communities in disaster preparedness and management by way of training and increased awareness is the most effective means to mitigate the effects of natural disaster in the country.
